The Last Lecture book
Randy Pausch
* Somehow, with the passage of time, and the deadlines that life imposes, surrendering became the right thing to do – రాండీతో పరిచయం ఈ వాక్యంతోటే. చదవగానే “అబ్బా.. మరీ నిర్వేదం. ఎందుకు లొంగిపోవడం? ఎదురు తిరగాలి గాని? ఏం బాలేదు” అని అనుకుంటూనే అసలు అన్నవారి గురించి తెలుసుకుందామని గూగుల్లో వెతికితే, Randy Pausch ఒక అమెరికన్ కంప్యూటర్ ప్రొఫెసర్ అనీ, చిన్న వయస్సులోనే పాంక్రియాటిక్ కాన్సర్ బారిన పడి. జూలై 25, 2008 న మరణించారు అనీ. తాను మరణించబోతున్నారు అని తెలుసుకుని, కడసారిగా తన యూనివర్సిటీలో ఇప్పటిదాకా తన ప్రయాణాన్ని పునశ్చరణ చేసుకునేలా “Really Achieving Your Childhood Dreams” అన్న లెక్చర్ ని ఇచ్చారనీ, (వీడియో ఇక్కడ లభ్యం) అటు తర్వాత The Last Lecture అనే పుస్తకాన్ని రాశారనీ అని తెలిసింది.
* తరగతి గదిలో మహరాజులు/ మహరాణుల్లా కూర్చుని, మన ముందు నిలుచున్న వ్యక్తి వైపు తదేకంగా చూస్తూ పాఠాలు వింటున్నప్పుడు “క్లాసు రూం లో తపస్సు చేయిట వేస్టురా గురూ” అని అనిపిస్తుంది. బయటున్న ప్రపంచంలోకి వచ్చేసరికి మహారాజులం కాస్త సామాన్య ప్రజానీకం అయ్యిపోతాం. ఇప్పుడు మనల్ని ఆడించడం జీవితం వంతు. చాలానే నేర్పిస్తుంది జీవితం కూడా, కాకపోతే వీలైనన్ని తిప్పలు పెట్టి మరీ. అందుకే ఒక్కోసారి మళ్ళీ క్లాసుల్లోకి వెళ్ళిపోవాలనిపిస్తుంది నాకు. నాకు అర్ధమయ్యే స్థాయికి దిగి వచ్చి, నాకర్ధమయ్యే వరకూ ఓపిగ్గా చెప్పేవారుండడం కూడా అదృష్టం కదా?
* రాండీ అనగానే ఇక పై నాకు గుర్తు వచ్చేది కాన్సర్ కాదు. Imagineer (Imagination+Engineer) అన్న ఆంగ్ల పదం. రాండీకి చిన్నప్పటి నుండి వాల్ట్ డిస్నీలో పని చేయాలని కోరిక ఉండేది. అక్కడ పని చేసే వారిని ఇమాజనీర్స్ అని అంటారు. అబ్బుర పరిచింది ఆ పదం నన్ను. Engineering is not about perfect solutions; it’s about the best you can do with limited resources. ఉన్న పరిమితులని పడగొట్టటంలో ఊహలకున్నంత బలం అంతా ఇంతా కాదు. ఈ రెంటినీ సమపాళ్ళల్లో కలిపితే ఎన్ని అందాలను ఆవిష్కరించవచ్చు కదా! రాండీ ఎంచక్కా తనని తాను “ఇమాజనీర్” అనేసుకుంటారు, డిస్నీతో పని చేశారు కావున. నేను డిస్నీతో పని చేసే అవకాశం ఒక్కటే లేదు! ఉన్న ఇంజనీరింగ్ డిగ్రీ, నా ఊహలూ సరిపోతే బాగుణ్ణు ఆ పేరు పెట్టేసుకోవడానికి అని అనిపిస్తుంది. ప్చ్! 😦 (మరీ మనసును ఊరించేస్తుంది ఆ పేరు :-(( )
*ఇప్పుడో ఫుట్ బాల్ ఆటలో ఓ అబ్బి కాలి దగ్గర బాల్ ఉంటే, అతడు తల ఎటు వైపుకి తిరిగి ఉంటే అటే కొట్టేస్తాడేమో అని అనుకుంటాము కదా? కానీ అలా కాకుండా అతడి నడుము భాగాన్ని చూస్తే, ఖచ్చితంగా ఏ వైపుకి కొడతాడో చెప్పవచ్చునట. దీన్నే Head Fake అంటారు. ఈ పదాన్ని రాండీ “ఒకటి నేర్చుకుంటున్నాము అనుకుని దాన్ని అభ్యసిస్తున్నప్పుడు, మనం వేరేవి బాగా నేర్చుసుకుంటాము” అనే ప్రక్రియకి కూడా ఉపయోగిస్తారు. (indirect learning) మనం ఒక ఆట ఆడుతుంటే, మనం ఆ ఆటనే నేర్చుకుంటున్నాము అనుకుంటుంటాము, కానీ అసలు నేర్చుకునేది శ్రమకోర్చడం, టీం వర్క్, పట్టుదల, కష్టాలను అధిగమించడం లాంటివి. ఇప్పుడూ నేను తెలుగు బ్లాగులు రాయడంలో కూడా “భాషా, భావ వ్యక్తీకరణ” మెరుగుపడాలి అని అనిపించినా, టైం మానేజ్ మెంట్, నచ్చని అభిప్రాయాలతో వినమ్రంగా విభేదించటం, నా అనుభవంలోకి రాని జీవితాన్ని చదివి ఆకళింపు చేసుకోవడం, ముఖపరిచయం కూడా లేని వాళ్ళతో ఆప్తులుగా కలిసిపోగలగడం లాంటివి తెలుగు బ్లాగుల వల్ల నేను నేర్చుకున్న(కుంటున్న) అసలైన జీవితం. హైడ్ ఫేక్ అంటే అర్ధం అయ్యిందిగా? మీ అనుభవాలు చెప్పండి మరి?
* “నువ్వింకో మూడు నెలల్లో చనిపోతావు, ఇక మేము చేసేది కూడా ఏమీ లేదు” అని ఒక డాక్టర్ ఓ మనిషితో చెప్తే నేల కింద భూమి కంపించినట్టు, ఓ పెద్ద అల వచ్చి శిలని కొట్టినట్టు అని నేను వర్ణించకపోయినా ఆ బాధ మీకు తెలుసు. బాధ, భయం, ఆశ, ఆవేశం, నిస్పృహ, అసహనం అన్నీ కలిసి ఒక్కసారిగా చుట్టుముట్టేస్తాయి. మెదడు పని చేయటం మానేస్తుందేమో అని అనిపిస్తుంది. కానీ రాండీ బుర్ర చకచకా పని చేస్తుంది ఇలాంటి సమయాల్లోనూ. ఇక లాభం లేదన్న మాట వినగానే కుప్పకూలిన భార్యని ఓదారుస్తున్న డాక్టర్ మాటల్లో “మందు”ని రాండీ ఇలా చెప్తాడు.
“..he isn’t putting his arm around her shoulder, I understand why. That would be too presumptuous. But he’s leaning in, his hand on her knee. Boy, he’s good at this.”
“..the most inpenetrable bricks walls are made of human flesh. And the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They are there to stop the other people.”
When it comes to men who are romantically interested in you, it’s really simple. Just ignore everything they say and only pay attention to what they do.
Live in the moment! Time is all you have. And you may find one day that you have less than you think.
Hey, I’ve saw this video a few months back , but didn’t take it very seriously.

200% agreed.

Good to know that there are people who care about Randy Pausch and his message.
Here is another inspiring talk from Randy.

“Its not the things that we do in life that we regret, it is the things we do not. ….. You will need to find your passion, don’t give up on finding it. Find your passion and follow it. You will not find that passion in things, you will not find it in money. The passion must come from the things that you feel from inside. Honors and rewards are nice things but only to the extent that you regard the real respect from your peers and to be thought well of by people who you think more highly of is a tremendous honor. “
I wonder why there is not a single Randy in India!!

Purnima,
The answer to that interesting question is, universities, colleges schools and education in US are geared towards empowering people (comparatively) while we in India read the class books designed buy the British for producing a Rs 30/month clerk job. (I am probably exaggerating, but not beyond truth)
The whole aim of our education is to get a software job, or become a doctor, get married and better dowry! Our education system makes us incapable of *thinking*

Hmm! I was closely following randy pausch from may be year and had been constantly reading and watching about him. However the article presented here has nicely wrapped in most of the details of his life and book…. kaakapothe I was concerned with one of the comments that why we dont have randy pausch here…. unfortunately there are many of them and just that we dont recognise…. For example srinivasa ramanujan…
When Ramanujan was dying of tuberculosis in a hospital, G. H. Hardy would frequently visit him. It was on one of these visits that the following occurred according to C. P. Snow.
“Hardy used to visit him, as he lay dying in hospital at Putney. It was on one of those visits that there happened the incident of the taxicab number. Hardy had gone out to Putney by taxi, as usual his chosen method of conveyance. He went into the room where Ramanujan was lying. Hardy, always inept about introducing a conversation, said, probably without a greeting, and certainly as his first remark: ‘I thought the number of my taxicab was 1729. It seemed to me rather a dull number.’ To which Ramanujan replied: ‘No, Hardy! No, Hardy! It is a very interesting number. It is the smallest number expressible as the sum of two cubes in two different ways.’”

Oh well.. Ramanujan belongs to a different league altogether. A genius. Randy delivered a lecture when he learned that his pancreatic cancer was terminal. Ramanujan was at his best even on the death bed. While one may view it as a similarity, drawing comparisons between them and arriving at conclusions is not scientific.
When I asked the question why there isn’t a single Randy in India, I didn’t imply that there are nobody in India who are courageous, witty and sane in the face of death, for I know there were, like that proverbial Indian soldier in 1857 after taking a stab in his heart told his ebnemy “tatvam asi”!
I will tell you what I meant, If you have closely followed his talks and writings, Randy insists on making mistakes and learning from them. He says
“ts not the things that we do in life that we regret, it is the things we do not. ….. You will need to find your passion, don’t give up on finding it. Find your passion and follow it. You will not find that passion in things, you will not find it in money. The passion must come from the things that you feel from inside.”
Now that inspires me. If you quote this to a 16 year old, it would inspire him/her too. But, in India, do we let our kids choose their passion? We don’t, as if we can’t afford to. Ever since they finish their 10th class, the race begins. Race to get a good rank in EAMCET, get into some IIT/IIM/ISB. Become an engineer/doctor, get out of the country, never to return again.
It is true that there are men of exceptional merit here too, but there are few and far between. US constantly produces men of Randy’s quality. In US, you are encouraged to be innovative, In India you are penalized if you are innovative.

Sorry for a rather long comment. There was a question begging to be answered, and I did. You may choose not to publish this comment, which is fine with me 🙂
