దండన (दण्ड)

(Note: The following is my translation of Shri HariShankar Parsai’s satirical piece “दण्ड”. I came to know about this prolific writer, only this evening. And since then, have been swimming playfully in the ocean of his satire and humour. I was too excited to talk about him and ended up trying my hand at his shorter pieces. I plan to work on the longer ones too, but for now, here are a series of post.

 ఒక కళాకారుడు ఏదో ఘోర అపరాధం చేశాడు. అతడిని రాజుగారి ముందు ప్రవేశబెట్టారు. రాజు, మంత్రిని అడిగాడు – “ఇతడికి మూడేళ్ళ శిక్ష వేస్తే సరిపోతుందా?”

మంత్రి అన్నాడు,”అపరాధము చాలా పెద్దది. మూడేళ్ళ శిక్ష అంటే చాలా తక్కువ.”

“అయితే పదేళ్ళు సరిపోతుంది.”

“పదేళ్ళు కూడా తక్కువ శిక్షే!”

“అలా అయితే, యావజ్జీవ కారాగారం”

“లేదు. అది కూడా సరిపోదు.”

“పోనీ, ఉరి వేస్తే?”

“లేదు. ఉరి కూడా తక్కువ శిక్షే!”

రాజు విసుక్కుంటూ అడిగాడు – “ఉరికి మించిన దండన ఏముందో, నువ్వే చెప్పు!”

మంత్రి అన్నాడు – ఇతగాడిని ఎక్కడైన కూర్చోబెట్టి ఇతడి ముందు వేరొక కళాకారుని పొగడాలి.”
